Understand ATEX
Standards
ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) standards
are EU regulations safeguarding locations at risk
of explosive atmospheres from gases, mists, or dusts.
These rules primarily affect mining, petrochemical,
and food sectors where hazardous conditions exist.

ATEX Standards: Safety Regulations for Explosive Atmospheres
A Comprehensive Guide to EU Directives, Classifications, and Compliance Requirements

Key ATEX Directives
Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114):
This directive pertains to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. It outlines essential health and safety requirements and conformity assessment procedures that manufacturers must follow before placing products on the EU market. Read More
Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 153):
This directive focuses on the minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. It mandates employers to assess explosion risks and classify areas where explosive atmospheres may occur into zones. Read More

Classification of Hazardous Areas
ATEX guidelines require the classification of hazardous areas into zones based on the frequency and duration of the presence of explosive atmospheres:
Zone 0, 20
An area where an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods.
Zone 1, 21
An area where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation.
Zone 2, 22
An area where an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it occurs, will persist for a short period only.
Proper classification is vital for selecting appropriate equipment and ensuring workplace safety.

ATEX Equipment Categories
Equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres is categorized based on the level of protection:
Category 1
Equipment designed for use in Zone 0,20 offering a very high level of protection.
Category 2
Equipment suitable for Zone 1, 21 providing a high level of protection.
Category 3
Equipment intended for Zone 2, 22 ensuring a normal level of protection.
These categories guide manufacturers and users in selecting equipment that meets safety requirements for specific zones.

Compliance and Certification
Manufacturers must ensure that their equipment complies with ATEX directives by:
CE Marking
Affixing the CE mark indicates that the product complies with the essential health and safety requirements of relevant EU directives. However, for ATEX compliance, additional certification and testing specific to the ATEX directive are required.
Declaration of Conformity
Providing documentation that certifies compliance with applicable standards.
Notified Bodies
In some cases, involving third-party organizations to assess conformity, especially for higher-risk equipment categories.
Compliance ensures the free movement of goods within the EU and adherence to safety standards.

Recent Updates to ATEX Directives
The ATEX directive has undergone updates to align with the New Legislative Framework policy, enhancing the clarity and consistency of the regulations. The current directive, 2014/34/EU, has been applicable since April 20, 2016, replacing the previous Directive 94/9/EC.
Understanding and adhering to ATEX standards is crucial for ensuring safety in industries prone to explosive atmospheres. Proper classification of hazardous areas, selection of appropriate equipment, and compliance with directives not only safeguard workers but also ensure legal conformity within the European Union.
